Security Tips: Social Engineering

Social Engineering

Keeping your information safe and secure.

As a member of LA Financial Credit Union, your safety and security is of the utmost importance to us.

Social engineering (manipulating people so they give up confidential information) can take a variety of forms and is one of the most successful tactics that people with malicious intent use to gain access to secure and sensitive information.

Common tactics include sending “spoofed” emails or “spoofing” known phone numbers that appear to be from reliable sources asking for personal information like credit card information, bank account information, and other sensitive personal information. It can also include links prompting you to take some action also with the same malicious intent.

You can always call your card issuer to verify the information that you were provided over the phone prior to divulging private, sensitive information.

While, we can’t stop “spoofing” from taking place, anytime you receive a call from a known or unknown number be aware that they may not be who they say they are. If anyone calls asking you to verify information over the phone, be wary. You can always refuse to provide information.
